About the Aquarium

Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies is consistently rated one of the top aquariums in America, and it's easy to see why. Since opening in 2000, it has welcomed millions of visitors who come to experience its stunning 340-foot underwater tunnel, playful penguins, diverse marine life, and interactive touch experiences.

The aquarium is located right on the Parkway in downtown Gatlinburg, making it perfect for rainy days or as a complement to outdoor adventures. It's also one of the few Gatlinburg attractions open year-round, including holidays.

What sets this aquarium apart is its commitment to education and conservation alongside entertainment. Interactive programs, live animal encounters, and behind-the-scenes tours offer deeper experiences for those who want more than just looking at fish.

Best Time to Visit

Arrive when doors open (typically 9 AM) or visit in late afternoon for smaller crowds. The aquarium tends to be busiest mid-morning through early afternoon, especially on rainy days when outdoor activities are less appealing.

Main Exhibits

Shark Lagoon & Underwater Tunnel

The crown jewel of the aquarium is the 340-foot-long underwater tunnel that carries you through 750,000 gallons of water on a moving walkway. Sharks, giant sea turtles, and rays glide overhead and beside you. It's a mesmerizing experience that feels like being on the ocean floor.

Penguin Playhouse

Coral Reef

A vibrant display of tropical fish, living coral, and colorful reef inhabitants. The diversity of life in this exhibit showcases the incredible biodiversity of healthy reef ecosystems.
