What Are Mountain Coasters?
Mountain coasters, also known as alpine coasters, are one of the most popular thrill rides in the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge area. Unlike traditional roller coasters where you are locked into a car with no control, mountain coasters put you in the driver's seat. You ride a small cart on a fixed track that winds down a mountainside, using a hand brake to control your speed. Pull the brake to slow down and enjoy the views, or release it to fly through turns and dips at exhilarating speeds.
The beauty of mountain coasters is that they are thrilling enough for adrenaline junkies but gentle enough for cautious riders and young children (who ride with an adult). The same coaster can provide a leisurely scenic ride or a white-knuckle speed run depending on how much brake you use. This makes mountain coasters one of the few attractions that truly works for every member of the family.
The Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge area has become a hotspot for mountain coasters, with several world-class installations that take advantage of the mountainous terrain. Each coaster offers a unique experience based on its location, length, and track design. Tracks wind through forests, around rock formations, and down steep mountainsides, with some reaching speeds of 25 to 35 miles per hour for those brave enough to let go of the brake.
Mountain Coasters in the Area
Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster (Pigeon Forge)
One of the longest mountain coasters in the United States, the Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster stretches over a mile in length with a track that winds down the mountain through dense forest. The ride begins with a scenic chairlift ride to the top, then you race down through twists, turns, and dips for an unforgettable experience. Night rides are available with LED-lit tracks that create a magical atmosphere.
Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster
Located right on the Gatlinburg strip, this coaster is convenient for downtown visitors. The track winds through Smoky Mountain terrain with sharp curves and exciting drops. The downtown location means you can easily combine a ride with shopping and dining in Gatlinburg.
Anakeesta Rail Runner
Part of the Anakeesta mountaintop park, the Rail Runner is a single-rail coaster that offers a unique riding experience through the forest canopy. The single-rail design allows the cart to lean into turns, creating a more dynamic and exciting ride. Additional cost beyond Anakeesta admission.
Rowdy Bear Mountain Coaster (Pigeon Forge)
One of the newest mountain coasters in the area, Rowdy Bear features a steep track with intense drops and sharp turns. The coaster is part of a larger entertainment complex that includes an alpine slide and other attractions, making it a great destination for extended fun.

Several mountain coasters in the area offer night riding, and the experience is dramatically different from daytime runs. LED lights illuminate the track ahead of you as you race down the darkened mountain, with the sensation of speed greatly amplified by the darkness. The surrounding forest is bathed in colorful light, creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere. Trees seem to materialize just as you reach them, and turns feel more surprising when you cannot see them coming from a distance.
Night rides are especially popular during summer when the extended daylight hours push sunset rides into the evening. Many locals consider night mountain coasters to be among the most unique entertainment experiences in the entire Smokies area. If you only ride once, consider making it an evening or night ride for the most memorable experience.
Tips for Riding Mountain Coasters
- Start with the brake on: Your first run, keep your hand on the brake until you get a feel for the speed and turns
- Young children ride as passengers: Kids as young as 3 can ride in the cart with an adult driver, seated between the adult's legs
- Buy multi-ride passes: Most coasters offer discounted multi-ride tickets. You will almost certainly want to ride more than once.
- Go during less busy times: Early morning and weekday visits mean shorter wait times
- Secure loose items: Phones, sunglasses, and hats can fly off at speed. Use a pocket with a zipper or leave items in the car.
- Weather closures: Coasters close during heavy rain, thunderstorms, and icy conditions. Light rain may still allow operation.
- Try different coasters: Each one has a different character. The Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster is the longest, Rowdy Bear is the steepest, and Anakeesta's Rail Runner is the most unique design.
