Quick Facts
Why June is Special
June marks the start of summer peak season in the Smoky Mountains. School is out, families arrive for vacation, and the mountains are lush and green. Temperatures climb into the 70s and 80s, perfect for hiking, tubing, and outdoor adventures. Long daylight hours mean more time to explore.
One of the most magical experiences in the Smokies happens in June: the Synchronous Fireflies. For about two weeks, thousands of fireflies flash in unison in Elkmont, creating an otherworldly light show. Access is by lottery only, so plan ahead. The Craftsmen's Fair brings hundreds of artisans to the Gatlinburg Convention Center, and Tunes & Tales fills the Parkway with live performers and storytellers each evening.
June is a busy month. Book your cabin 3 to 4 months ahead. If you want to see the Synchronous Fireflies, enter the lottery when it opens (typically in April) and plan your trip around the viewing window.
