Anakeesta sits 2,000 feet above downtown Gatlinburg. That elevation is not a marketing line. It is why we send leaf-chasers up here in late September. The first yellows show on the high ridges while the Parkway still looks like late summer. Bear-Varian is the fall festival that rides along with general admission from August 28 through November 1, 2026.

This page is how we plan the day from a Phoenix Landing cabin. The primary move is still booking the cabin on this site. Anakeesta sells its own tickets.

What Bear-Varian actually is

Bear-Varian is Anakeesta's fall festival. Think pretzels, schnitzel, live music, and a tasting card, not a separate ticketed event you add at the gate. If you are already going up for the lift, skywalk, and views, the festival is the seasonal layer on top.

It runs long enough to cover the whole elevation walk of fall color: first yellows in late September, the mid-elevation show in October, and the last good weekends into November 1.

What to expect on the mountain

Plan a half day at minimum. The lift ride is part of the experience. Once you are up, you can walk the village, ride the mountain coaster if it is your kind of thing, and settle into tasting locations. Typical tasting hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. That window is a typical value, not a promise for every weekday. Recheck the park calendar the morning you go.

Evenings get cooler at 2,000 feet above town. Bring a layer even if downtown felt warm when you left the cabin. If you are pairing this with a leaf drive the same day, do Anakeesta later and the park earlier. Parking tags and trailhead lots are the harder constraint.

Location and how we get there

Anakeesta is at 576 Parkway, Gatlinburg, traffic light #5. From our cabins it is about 8 minutes when the Parkway is behaving. On October Saturdays, give yourself more time or go after the first wave of downtown traffic.

Park once. Do not bounce between the park and the Parkway three times in one afternoon. If you want both leaves and Anakeesta, make them two half-days.

Insider tips

Keep the tasting card

Unused pours stay good through November 1 if you keep the card. If you are staying more than one night, you do not have to finish six pours in one cold evening.

Any of the five works. Serenity is the quiet pick after a loud mountaintop day. Million Dollar View and Dream Big sleep 8 with decks for sunset. Big Sky Lodge and Funky Bear Lodge sleep 12 if the whole reunion is going up together.
