Quick Facts
The night the lights come on
Thursday, November 6, 2026 is the 36th Annual Gatlinburg Winter Magic Kickoff and Chili Cookoff. It is a street festival on the Parkway from 5 to 9 p.m. Over a million LEDs get the ceremonial flip around 8 p.m. After that night, the lights stay on through February 2027. This short lander is for people who are targeting that Thursday (or the weekend around it). For the rest of December, use Christmas in Gatlinburg 2026.
Chili, vendors, and what is free
Walking the Parkway is free. Tasting wristbands are $10 (ages 5+, on site). Expect 15 to 20 chili vendors and categories for Judge's Choice, People's Choice, Best Booth Decoration, and Best Dessert. The city also stacks Christmas-tree-farm photos, Santa, carnival games, ice skating, and inflatables around the same window. Live entertainment runs through the evening. We do not sell wristbands.
Dollywood's Smoky Mountain Christmas opens the same day, November 6. That is a Pigeon Forge full day. Do not try to do chili at 6 p.m. and Dollywood the same night unless you like being late to both.
How we stay for kickoff
Our cabins are about 8 minutes from the Parkway when it is behaving. On November 6 it will not be behaving after 4 p.m. Drive down early, park once, walk. Come home to a fireplace. Serenity if you want quiet after the crowd. Funky Bear Lodge if the group wants a celebration night. Thanksgiving week is later (November 26). Many families book kickoff weekend and Thanksgiving as two different trips. See Thanksgiving in Gatlinburg 2026 and the Christmas cabin page.
Book the cabin for lights-on night
November 6 weekend is one of the four scarcest weekends we see (with Pancake Week, July 4, and peak October).
Check November availabilityTraffic and packing
- Parkway closed during the event. Plan a park-and-walk.
- Coat, gloves, comfortable shoes. You will stand still for the 8 p.m. flip.
- Eat chili as dinner or eat at the cabin first. $10 is tasting, not a planned meal for a hungry 12-year-old.
- Bring a small billfold. Wristbands are on site.
