Quick Facts
When is the Gatlinburg Chili Cookoff in 2026?
The official Gatlinburg CVB events calendar lists the Winter Festival and Chili Cookoff on Thursday, November 12, 2026. The Pigeon Forge CVB event page and the Pigeon Forge Winterfest listing give the same date and the hours 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the Parkway between the Mountain Mall and Gatlinburg SkyPark. The same Gatlinburg calendar lists Winter Magic from November 5. We follow those listings and do not invent a ceremonial light-flip minute.
What the chili cookoff is
This is Gatlinburg's 36th annual chili cookoff, presented by Bush's Chili Beans, according to the current Pigeon Forge CVB listing. Local restaurants, organizations, and attractions serve chili on the Parkway. The street festival is free. If you want to taste, you need a wristband.
The Winterfest listing also names a Christmas tree farm, photos with Santa, carnival games, a giant inflatable snow globe, holiday photo ops, an ice skating rink, a Snomazing inflatable maze, and carolers. The same listing names live music from Seth Mulder and Midnight Run Bluegrass Band and DEK of Hearts. If a lineup changes, the official event pages are the source of truth. We do not sell wristbands or vendor spots.
Cost and how tasting works
Walking the Parkway is free and open to everyone. Chili tasting wristbands are 10 dollars for ages 5 and up. Official listings say wristbands are sold only at the event, first come, first served. Children under 5 are not required to have a tasting wristband in those listings. Bring cash or a card you can use on site. We have not seen an official online pre-sale, so we do not advertise one.
Ten dollars is tasting, not a planned dinner for a hungry teenager. Eat at the cabin first, or treat chili as a snack and have a real meal later. Vendor counts and contest category names are not on the current official pages, so we do not invent them.
Where it is, and where to park
The event sits on the Parkway from the Mountain Mall to Gatlinburg SkyPark in downtown Gatlinburg. Official 2026 listings do not publish a reserved lot list or a posted parking price for cookoff night. The city's parking page points to public and private lots and garages around downtown, plus the free Gatlinburg Trolley. Our advice from living here: drive down early, park once, and walk. Do not expect a quick Parkway drive-through between 5 and 9 p.m.
Our cabins at Phoenix Landing are about 8 minutes from downtown when traffic is normal. On November 12 after 4 p.m., it will not be normal. Leave extra time.
Winter Magic, not the Christmas parade
The official Gatlinburg calendar lists Winter Magic from November 5. The chili cookoff is listed separately on November 12. After the lights are on, they stay through February 2027. You do not need a ticket to see the Parkway lights on later nights.
This is not the Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade. That parade is Friday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. EST. Full route and closure times are on our Gatlinburg Christmas Parade 2026 page and the broader Christmas in Gatlinburg 2026 guide. Do not stack chili night with parade night unless you are booking two downtown evenings on purpose.
Dollywood's Smoky Mountain Christmas is listed November 6, 2026 through January 3, 2027. That is a full Pigeon Forge day. Do not stack it with the 5 to 9 p.m. cookoff if you want both.

November 12 weekend is one of the four scarcest weekends we see, with Pancake Week, July 4, and peak October.
